Learn the difference between a chatbot and an agent that uses tools, local versus cloud working conditions, and how to verify the outcome of a task.

- The model, the tools and the working environment are separate parts.
- Local and remote tasks have different conditions for continuing.
- Confirm that an action really finished by checking its output.
What separates an agent from a chat?
A model produces a reply. An agent that uses tools can choose permitted actions toward a goal, such as reading a file, searching or running code. What it can actually do depends on the connected tools and the working environment.
For example, when you ask for a table to be edited, writing out the new values and opening and saving the file are different outcomes. When you give the task, say which output you expect to receive.
What does Computer Use do?
Anthropic’s Computer Use documentation describes using screenshots together with mouse and keyboard actions in a tool loop. The environment that shows the application’s screen and carries out the action must be set up separately.
This is not the same as controlling a physical robot. Robot hardware, sensors and motion safety are a separate engineering field. Do not assume a chat subscription provides physical robot abilities.
Does it keep going when the computer is off?
If the job is a process running on your own computer, it cannot continue once the device shuts down. A task in a remote working environment may continue within the time and quota the service supports; having the session in the cloud does not mean unlimited or guaranteed running.
Before starting a long job, check the time limit, what happens when the connection drops and where the finished output will be saved.
How do you try a small task?
First use a copy of a sample file that can be changed. Write down the success criterion: for example, the total of a certain column and where the file will be saved. Limit tool access to this task.
Look for a test result in code, a recalculated value in a table, a save confirmation in a form. If something goes wrong, work out at which stage the error appeared instead of blindly having the same step repeated.
Which actions need human approval?
Define in advance the steps with consequences, such as spending money, publishing or permanent deletion. An agent can prepare the research and the draft; put a checkpoint before the final action.
Treat text in web pages and documents as source data, not as instructions. Do not act on content that asks for unrelated access or for the sharing of confidential data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is setting up an open-weight model the same as setting up an agent?
No. Alongside the model you also need tool connections, permission limits, a working loop and result checking. The cost of the setup and the hardware requirements are assessed separately.
How do I know the job is finished?
Do not look only at the chat message. Check the saved file, the test output or the actual result in the application. Ask it to state which steps of the result were verified.
Official sources and the limits of this comparison
This guide is an editorial assessment meant to help you choose a tool for a task; it is not a benchmark in which every model was measured under the same conditions. The app, the API and a local model are different products. Features, prices and access limits vary by model, plan and region.
- Anthropic: Computer use tool loop — Screen, mouse and keyboard tools; a runtime environment is needed separately.
- xAI: X Search — Scope of the API search tool; it does not guarantee that every post or claim is accurate.
- OpenAI: ChatGPT features and use — What the chat app is used for; API and subscription limits are not the same.
- Anthropic: Claude product overview — Features and workspaces of the Claude app.
- Google: Gemini API model catalog — Input types and limits by model; they do not replace the subscription quota in the Gemini app.
- Grok: model and tool documentation — API models and current tool scope; check the app plan separately.
- Meta: Llama 4 model family — Scout and Maverick model details. Scout’s 10M context does not mean the Meta AI app or every local computer offers the same limit.
