What "visit duration" measures

Similarweb's visit duration is the average length of one session on a website, on desktop or mobile browser. It is useful for comparing how long a single web visit lasts. It misses three things:

  • App use. Most social media time is spent in apps, and these figures leave that out.
  • Frequency. A platform with short visits can still take up a lot of the day if people open it often.
  • Quality. A longer visit does not mean a better one.

Visit length vs daily time

Picture two people. One opens a site once and reads for 13 minutes. The other checks an app twenty times for 30 seconds each, which is 10 minutes in total. Visit-duration charts rank the first behaviour higher. Daily time-spent studies, which are usually measured in apps, may rank them about the same. So when you see a headline claiming one platform "dominates", check which of the two it measures.

Why the September 2026 chart got attention

The chart spread widely on X in early November 2026, after the platform's owner shared it on 1 November (TeslaNorth). It shows that X's web visits are long compared with Meta's websites. On its own, it does not tell you which platform people use most overall.

Longer visits don't mean more connection

The World Happiness Report 2026 found that platforms built around algorithmic feeds tend to be linked with lower wellbeing, while platforms built for social connection show a positive link (World Happiness Report).
