The short answer

Quick answer: In the World Happiness Report 2026, published in March 2026, Finland is the happiest country in the world for the ninth year in a row, with an average life evaluation of 7.764 out of 10. Iceland (7.540), Denmark (7.539) and Costa Rica (7.439) follow. The report ranks countries, not cities, so this quiz works in two steps: first it matches you to a high-ranking country, then to a city you can explore on whoin.

Three changes stand out.

Costa Rica's fourth place is its best-ever position, after a multi-year rise from a low of 23rd in 2023 (World Happiness Report). Switzerland is back in the top 10 after a year out.

For the second year running, no English-speaking country is in the top 10: the United States is 23rd, Canada 25th and the United Kingdom 29th.

How the ranking works

The World Happiness Report is a partnership of Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the report's editorial board. The 2026 edition is the 14th. People in more than 140 countries answer one question from the Gallup World Poll: on a ladder from 0 (worst possible life) to 10 (best possible life), where do you stand now? Each country's rank is a three-year average of those answers. The 2026 rankings use survey data from 2023 to 2025, according to the report's Statistical Appendix.

The report then explains the gaps between countries with six factors: GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, a sense of freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption. Those factors explain the gaps; they do not set the order. The ranking itself rests only on how people rate their own lives.

The quiz

Five questions, one letter each. Count your letters, then read your result. There are no wrong answers, and no one will grade you: it is a way to think about what the high-ranking countries have in common, not a scientific test.

  • Question 1: A free Saturday looks best when it starts with… A) A sauna, a cold lake and nobody talking much; B) A long lunch with family that turns into dinner; C) A bike ride along a canal to a market; D) A walk through an old town and a museum café
  • Question 2: What matters most in where you live? A) Trust: I want to leave my bike unlocked; B) Warmth: people who talk to strangers; C) Balance: short commutes and time off; D) Culture: theatre, music and history on the doorstep
  • Question 3: Pick a climate. A) Real winters and endless summer light; B) Warm all year; C) Mild and rainy, never extreme; D) Four clear seasons
  • Question 4: How do you make friends in a new place? A) Slowly, through a club or hobby; B) Fast, through neighbours and invitations; C) Through work, sport and the local café; D) Through events, classes and nights out
  • Question 5: Which of the report's six factors would you rank first? A) Low corruption and trust in institutions; B) Having someone to count on; C) Freedom to make life choices; D) Healthy life expectancy

Mostly A: the Nordic model (Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway)

Five of the top six countries are Nordic. If high trust and a quiet, outdoor life appeal to you, welcome home. To be honest: whoin has no city page in Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden or Norway yet. The closest real page we have is Amsterdam, in the Netherlands (7th), which shares the high-trust, cycling-friendly lifestyle but is not Nordic.

Mostly B: Latin warmth (Costa Rica #4, Mexico #12)

Costa Rica and Mexico both rank above the United States and the United Kingdom. Explore Mexico City or the beach life of Cancún.

Mostly C: the balanced middle (Netherlands #7, Belgium #14, Germany #17)

Think cycling cities, short commutes and a strong social safety net. Try Amsterdam or Berlin.

Mostly D: Central Europe and the Alps (Switzerland #10, Austria #19, Czechia #20)

Switzerland and Austria are Alpine Western Europe; Czechia is Central Europe. The report notes Central and Eastern Europe is converging with Western Europe: Kosovo (16th), Slovenia (18th) and Czechia (20th) keep rising. Explore Vienna or Prague.

What the 2026 report says about social media

The 2026 edition focuses on social media. It finds the largest falls in young people's wellbeing in English-speaking countries, especially the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Platforms built around algorithmically curated content tend to show a negative link with wellbeing, while platforms designed for social connection show a clear positive link. For more on how much time we spend on each app, read time spent on social platforms in 2026.

Meet people where you land

Happiness, the report says again and again, is rooted in trust and social connection. Wherever your result points, the fastest way into a new place is through its people. See who is in Prague, Vienna or Mexico City on whoin, and read our guide to making friends in your first 30 days in a new city.

COMMON QUESTIONS · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the happiest country in the world in 2026?

Finland is the happiest country in the World Happiness Report 2026, published in March 2026, for the ninth year in a row. Its average life evaluation is 7.764 out of 10. Iceland (7.540) and Denmark (7.539) follow almost tied, and Costa Rica is fourth, its best-ever position after ranking 23rd in 2023.

Does the World Happiness Report rank cities?

No. The report ranks countries using three-year national averages from the Gallup World Poll, in which people rate their lives from 0 to 10. Any city list built on it, including this quiz, is an interpretation. To compare cities, use a city-level index such as a liveability or best-cities ranking instead.

Where do the US, Canada and the UK rank in 2026?

The United States is 23rd, Canada 25th and the United Kingdom 29th in the World Happiness Report 2026. For the second year running, no English-speaking country is in the top 10. The 2026 report also finds the largest falls in young people's wellbeing in English-speaking countries.

Which country is last in 2026?

Afghanistan is last, 147th of the 147 countries ranked, with an average life evaluation of 1.446 out of 10, according to the World Happiness Report 2026 Statistical Appendix. That is the lowest score in the ranking by a wide margin; Sierra Leone, the next-lowest country, scores above 3.

How is happiness measured in the World Happiness Report?

People answer the Cantril ladder question: on a scale from 0 (worst possible life) to 10 (best possible life), where do they stand now? Rankings use three-year averages. Six factors, GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption, help explain differences between countries but do not set the rank.

Is this quiz scientific?

No. It is a light way to match your preferences on climate, social life and values to traits shared by high-ranking countries. The ranking data comes from the World Happiness Report 2026, but your result is our editorial interpretation and not a prediction of how happy you would be anywhere.
