Four memorable TV series quotes you can understand without having seen the show: the exact line plus a short, spoiler-free context.
- Each quote was chosen because someone who has not seen the show can still follow it with a short bit of context.
- The exact line first, then a spoiler-free note on when it is said.
- Every quote was compared with at least two sources; the sources are listed at the end of the article.
Some TV series quotes are written so well that they stay with you after a short explanation, even if you have never watched the show. This list collects a line from each of four series in very different genres, from medical drama to fantasy epic to office comedy. For each one we give the exact line and briefly explain when it is said, without giving away any major surprise of a show you have not seen.
House M.D. (2004)
“Everybody lies.”
— Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) · Season 1, Episode 1
Context: Dr. House, a grumpy but brilliant diagnostician, reminds his team that patients do not tell even their own doctors the whole truth. So when diagnosing, he advises trusting evidence rather than what the patient says.
Ted Lasso (2020)
“Be curious, not judgmental.”
— Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) · Season 1, Episode 8
Context: Ted, an American coach who has taken over an English football team, plays a game of darts in a bar with a man who has been looking down on him. During his throws he explains that people have underestimated him all his life and that those who judged him never asked him a single question, and he brings up this saying.
The Office (US) (2013)
“I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.”
— Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) · Season 9, series finale
Context: In the finale of a documentary-style series about the employees of an ordinary paper company, Andy, a former coworker, says this to the camera as he says goodbye. He points out that we often realize how much good days were worth only after they are gone.
Game of Thrones (2011)
“The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.”
— Eddard “Ned” Stark (Sean Bean) · Season 1, Episode 1
Context: The ruler of a region in a medieval-style kingdom does not leave the execution of a deserter he has condemned to death to the executioner and carries it out himself. Afterward, with these words, he explains to his young son, who watched, that a person should not push the weight of a decision onto someone else.
How did we choose these quotes?
Only short quotes that can be understood without knowing the show, and that do not give away a major twist, made the list. No series appears twice. The context notes are written by Who In and are not taken from any official script or subtitle file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the quotes word for word?
Each quote was looked up in at least two sources with the same wording (such as Wikiquote, established press and criticism articles). Where sources differ only in punctuation, the most common form was used. A fifth candidate, a Doctor Who line, was dropped because a second source with the same wording could not be found. The list of sources is at the end of the article.
Are the context notes official?
No. The context notes were written by Who In to explain when and why each line is said; they are not taken from an official script, synopsis or subtitle file.
Sources and review method
On October 30, 2026, the quotes were chosen from a candidate list through independent verification: each line was compared with at least two sources, the speaker and year were matched against the sources, and each quote was judged separately for being understandable without seeing the show and for not spoiling it. On November 3, 2026, the listed source pages were fetched again and each quote was re-checked against at least two of them; sources that did not contain the wording, or that could not be fetched, were removed, and a Doctor Who candidate was dropped because only one source with the exact wording could be fetched. This is not a line-by-line comparison with the shows' scripts or subtitles. Translated and adapted for an international audience on 2026-11-03.
