Cities that never sleep, by the facts: 24/7 subways, no closing times and 4am licences in New York, Berlin, Istanbul, Chicago, London, Bangkok, Madrid and more.

- New York's subway runs 24/7; Chicago's Red and Blue Lines do too.
- Berlin has had no official closing time since 1949.
- Istanbul and London run night metros at weekends; Bangkok has 4am nightlife zones.
The short answer
Quick answer: the cities that truly never sleep are the ones where you can still get home at 4am. New York and Chicago run trains all night, Berlin has no official closing time, Istanbul and London run night trains at weekends, and Bangkok lets venues in set zones stay open until 4am.
We judged "never sleeps" by checkable things: overnight transport, closing-time rules and how residents rate their nightlife. Rules change, so check before you plan a big night.
New York: the original

The MTA says the New York subway runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, though some lines run less often or change routes late at night. In Expat Insider 2026, 86% of expats rated the city's culture and nightlife positively, and Time Out found 78% of locals call it the most exciting place they know.
Berlin: no closing time

West Berlin dropped its official closing time (Polizeistunde) in 1949, first as a trial and then for good. So Berlin bars and clubs can stay open through the night and into the next day, which is why weekend club nights can run from Saturday to Monday. 92% of expats rate Berlin's culture and nightlife positively (Expat Insider 2026).
Istanbul: the weekend Night Metro

Metro Istanbul runs its Night Metro without a break from Friday 06:00 to Sunday 00:00 on lines M1A, M1B, M2, M4, M5, M6 and M7 (part of M2 is excluded). That covers Friday and Saturday nights in Istanbul; Sunday night isn't included.
Chicago: two lines that never stop

The CTA runs the Red Line (Howard to 95th/Dan Ryan) and the Blue Line (O'Hare to Forest Park) 24 hours a day. In Chicago that means an all-night ride from the airport to the city center.
London: Night Tube at weekends

Transport for London runs the Night Tube on Friday and Saturday nights on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Windrush lines. On other nights London relies on night buses.
Bangkok and Phuket: the 4am zones

Since the government's December 2023 decision, licensed entertainment venues in some tourist zones in Thailand can stay open until 4am. In Bangkok the 4am zones are RCA, Silom/Patpong and Ratchadaphisek; elsewhere the usual limit is 2am. Phuket, including Patong, is covered too. Not every venue has the 4am permit, so check before you go.
Madrid and Mexico City: late by culture

Some cities stay up late because of how people live, not because of a rule. 79% of Madrid locals rate their nightlife highly (Time Out 2026). In Mexico City, 96% of expats rate the culture and nightlife positively, the top Leisure Options result in Expat Insider 2026.
Melbourne: the best nightlife in the best city

Melbourne is Time Out's best city for 2026, and 77% of locals would recommend its nightlife.
